How to Cancel a Free Trial Before You Get Charged (2025)
Updated May 2025 · 5 min read
You signed up for a free trial — now you need to cancel before the billing date. Here’s how to do it on iPhone, Android, and directly on each service’s website so you never get charged by surprise.
⚠️ Free trials auto-convert to paid subscriptions. Most services charge you the moment the trial ends — even if you haven’t used the app. Cancel before the trial end date to avoid charges.
Works for: Any app or service you subscribed to through the Apple App Store — Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Disney+, and thousands more. If you signed up on the service’s website (not through Apple), skip to the platform-specific guides below.
1
Open Settings
Open the Settings app on your iPhone. It’s the grey icon with gears — usually on your home screen or in your app library.
2
Tap Your Name
At the very top of Settings, tap your name (your Apple ID). This opens your Apple ID account page.
Settings → [Your Name]
3
Tap Subscriptions
Tap Subscriptions to see a full list of all your active and recently expired App Store subscriptions, including free trials.
Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions
4
Select the App with the Free Trial
Find the app whose free trial you want to cancel and tap it. You’ll see the trial end date clearly shown at the top of the subscription details screen.
5
Tap “Cancel Subscription” (or “Cancel Free Trial”)
Scroll down and tap Cancel Subscription or Cancel Free Trial. Confirm when prompted. Done — you won’t be charged, and you keep full access until the trial end date.
✓ You’re protected. After canceling, you keep full access to the app until the free trial period ends. Once the trial expires, your access stops and no charge is made to your card.

How to Cancel a Free Trial on Android (Google Play)
1
Open the Google Play Store
Open the Google Play Store app on your Android device.
2
Tap Your Profile Picture
Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner to open your account menu.
3
Go to Payments & Subscriptions
Tap Payments & subscriptions, then tap Subscriptions to see all active subscriptions and free trials.
Google Play → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
4
Select the Free Trial & Cancel
Find the subscription with the free trial, tap it, then tap Cancel subscription. Follow the on-screen prompts and confirm your cancellation. Your trial access continues until the trial end date.
Note: Google Play only shows subscriptions billed through Google Play. If you signed up for a trial directly on a service’s website, you must cancel there instead. See the platform guides below.

This is the single most reliable strategy. Cancel the free trial the moment you sign up. You still keep full access for the entire trial period — nothing changes until the trial end date. But you’re 100% protected from a charge no matter what happens.
2
Set a Calendar Reminder for 1 Day Before the Trial Ends
If you don’t want to cancel immediately, set a calendar reminder for 1 day before the trial end date. That gives you time to cancel and still keep access on the last day. Add the reminder the moment you sign up — don’t rely on memory.
3
Use a Virtual Card with a $0 Limit
Privacy.com lets you create a virtual debit card with a custom spending limit. Set it to $0 for trial sign-ups — if you forget to cancel, the charge will simply be declined and you won’t be billed. Free to use for up to 12 virtual cards per month.
4
Check Your Subscriptions List Weekly
On iPhone, check Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions once a week. On Android, check Google Play → Subscriptions. You’ll quickly spot any trial that’s about to convert and can cancel before the charge hits.

📞 Charged Directly by the Service
Contact the service’s customer support immediately (live chat is fastest).
Explain that you forgot to cancel the free trial and request a refund.
Most major services (Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, Disney+) will grant a one-time refund if contacted within 48–72 hours of the charge.
If the service refuses, contact your bank or credit card company to dispute the charge as unauthorized.
✓ Tip: Even if a company’s policy says “no refunds,” it’s always worth contacting support directly. Many companies have discretionary refund policies for first-time charges, especially if you can show the account was barely used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I cancel a free trial immediately after signing up?
⌄
Yes — and this is actually the best strategy. Cancel immediately after signing up. You still keep full access for the entire trial period, but you’re guaranteed not to be charged when the trial ends. Most services show you the trial end date in your account settings so you know exactly how long you have.
Will I lose access if I cancel a free trial early?
⌄
No. Canceling a free trial does not cut off your access immediately. You retain full access until the trial period ends. After that date, you simply won’t be charged — your access will expire naturally.
What happens to my free trial if I cancel?
⌄
When you cancel a free trial, you keep access until the trial end date. After that date, your subscription does not renew and you are not charged. Your account may remain active (so you can resubscribe later) but no new charges occur.
How do I get a refund if I forgot to cancel a free trial?
⌄
If you were charged within the last 48 hours, contact the service’s support team immediately and request a refund — many companies grant a one-time courtesy refund. For App Store charges, go to Settings → Apple ID → Purchase History → Report a Problem. For Google Play charges, go to play.google.com → Order History → Report a problem and request a refund within 48 hours of the charge.
How do I know when my free trial ends?
⌄
On iPhone, go to Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions — the trial end date is shown next to each subscription. On Android, open Google Play → Subscriptions to see trial end dates. For direct subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify), log in to your account on the service’s website and check the billing or subscription section.
Does canceling a free trial delete my account?
⌄
No. Canceling a free trial only stops the automatic billing when the trial expires. Your account and any saved data, playlists, or settings typically remain intact. You can usually resubscribe at any time to regain access. If you want to fully delete your account, that is a separate process in the service’s settings.
Never Forget to Cancel a Free Trial Again
The Cancel Subscriptions App shows you step-by-step how to cancel any service in under 2 minutes — and keeps track of all your active trials so nothing slips through.
