How to Cancel Subscriptions on iPhone — Complete 2025 Guide
Updated May 2025 · 6 min read
iPhone has 2 places where subscriptions live: Apple's App Store (billed through your Apple ID) and direct subscriptions billed straight to your credit card. This guide covers both — step by step.
Quick summary: For subscriptions billed through Apple, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. For subscriptions billed directly (Netflix, Spotify, Adobe), you must cancel on that service's own website. Not sure which is which? Keep reading.
Method 1 — App Store Subscriptions
Cancel App Store Subscriptions via Settings
This is the fastest way to cancel any subscription billed through your Apple ID. Works for iPhone and iPad.
1
Open the Settings app
Tap the grey Settings gear icon on your home screen. If you can't find it, swipe down on your home screen and search for "Settings".
2
Tap your name at the very top
At the top of Settings, you'll see your name and Apple ID email. Tap it to open your Apple ID account page.
Settings → [Your Name]
3
Tap "Subscriptions"
Scroll down the Apple ID page and tap Subscriptions. You'll see all active and recently expired subscriptions linked to your Apple ID, sorted by renewal date.
Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions
4
Find and tap the subscription you want to cancel
Tap the subscription name from the list. You'll see details including the price, billing cycle, and next renewal date.
5
Tap "Cancel Subscription" and confirm
Scroll to the bottom of the subscription details page and tap Cancel Subscription (shown in red). A confirmation prompt will appear — tap Confirm to complete the cancellation.
Note: If you only see "Cancel Free Trial", tap that to avoid being charged when the trial ends.
Important: After canceling, your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period. You will NOT be charged again after that date. Apple does not prorate refunds for unused time.
Method 2 — Via the App Store App
Alternative: Cancel via the App Store App
Same result as Method 1 — just a different starting point. Use whichever feels faster for you.
1
Open the App Store
Tap the blue App Store icon (white "A" on blue background) on your home screen.
2
Tap your profile icon (top right)
In the top-right corner of the App Store, tap your profile photo or initials to open your account.
3
Tap "Subscriptions"
On your account page, tap Subscriptions to see the same list as in Settings.
App Store → Profile → Subscriptions
4
Select the subscription and tap "Cancel Subscription"
Tap the subscription you want to cancel, scroll down, tap Cancel Subscription, and confirm. Done.
Don't see the subscription in either place? If a subscription is not listed under Settings or the App Store, it means it is billed directly to your credit card — not through Apple. See Section 3 below to cancel those.
Direct & Web Subscriptions
Cancel Direct/Web Subscriptions
Many popular services let you sign up directly on their website or in-app with a credit card — completely bypassing Apple. These subscriptions will not appear in your iPhone Settings or App Store subscriptions list. You must cancel them directly on the service's website.
Common examples: Netflix (if you signed up on netflix.com), Spotify (if you signed up on spotify.com), Adobe, LinkedIn Premium, Hulu, Disney+.
🎬
NetflixCancel at account.netflix.com → Membership & Billing → Cancel Membership
Not sure where your subscription is billed? Open your email and search for receipts from the service. If the receipt is from Apple (sender: no_reply@email.apple.com), it's an App Store subscription. If it's from the service itself (e.g., netflix.com), it's a direct subscription that you cancel on their website.
Find All Your Subscriptions
How to Find ALL Your iPhone Subscriptions
The average person has subscriptions scattered across their Apple ID, credit cards, and PayPal. Here's how to find them all.
1
Check Apple subscriptions first
Go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. This shows every active (and recently expired) subscription billed through your Apple ID. Review them and cancel any you no longer use.
2
Check your bank/credit card statements
Log in to your bank or credit card app and search the last 2 months of transactions. Look for recurring charges — they typically show up on the same date each month. Note any services you don't recognize or no longer use.
3
Search your email inbox for receipts
In your email app (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail), search for words like "subscription", "receipt", "billing", or "your subscription renews". This often surfaces subscriptions you forgot about.
4
Use the Cancel Subscriptions App for step-by-step help
Once you've identified what to cancel, download the Cancel Subscriptions App (free on the App Store). It has step-by-step cancellation guides for 200+ services — including the ones that bury their cancel button deep in menus.

What Happens After You Cancel a Subscription on iPhone
Here's exactly what to expect after you've tapped "Cancel Subscription" on your iPhone:
Access continues until the billing period ends. You will not lose access immediately. If your subscription renews on the 15th and you cancel on the 5th, you still have full access until the 15th.
You will not be charged again. Once canceled, no future charges will be made to your Apple ID for this subscription. The cancellation is permanent unless you choose to re-subscribe.
No automatic refund for unused time. Apple generally does not issue refunds for the remaining days in a billing period. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com separately.
Your account data may be kept by the app. Canceling a subscription stops the billing — it does not delete your account or data with the service. If you also want to delete your account, you'll need to do that separately in the app or on their website.
You can re-subscribe anytime. Canceling is not permanent. You can go back to Settings → Subscriptions and tap the service to see re-subscription options, usually at the current price.
The subscription shows as "Expired" after the period ends. It will remain visible in your Subscriptions list under "Expired" for about a year, so you have a record of it.
Canceled but still getting charged? Double-check whether the subscription is billed through a different Apple ID (family member's account, old email address), or whether it's a direct subscription not linked to Apple at all. Check your bank statement for the exact charge source.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does canceling a subscription immediately stop access?
›
No. When you cancel an App Store subscription on iPhone, your access continues until the end of the current billing period. For example, if you cancel a monthly subscription 10 days in, you still have 20 days of access remaining. You will not be charged again after that date.
How do I get a refund on an iPhone subscription?
›
Apple does not automatically issue refunds when you cancel. To request a refund, go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find the subscription charge, and select "Request a Refund". Refunds are not guaranteed but Apple does grant them for recent accidental charges and unwanted auto-renewals.
Why can't I find a subscription in my iPhone settings?
›
If a subscription doesn't appear under Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, it means it is not billed through Apple. Many services like Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon Prime allow you to subscribe directly on their website — those subscriptions are billed to your credit card, not through the App Store, and must be canceled on the service's own website or app settings.
Can I cancel a free trial on iPhone before being charged?
›
Yes. Go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions and find the trial subscription. Tap it and tap "Cancel Subscription" (or "Cancel Free Trial"). As long as you cancel before the trial period ends, you will not be charged. It is completely safe to cancel immediately after starting a trial — your trial access continues until the trial expires.
How do I cancel all subscriptions at once on iPhone?
›
There is no built-in way to cancel all subscriptions at once on iPhone — you need to cancel each one individually. Go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions to see and cancel all App Store subscriptions one by one. For direct-billed subscriptions, you must cancel on each service's website separately. The Cancel Subscriptions App provides step-by-step guides for 200+ services to speed up the process.
What if the "Cancel Subscription" button is grayed out?
›
A grayed-out Cancel Subscription button usually means one of three things: (1) The subscription was already canceled and is just showing remaining access time — no action needed. (2) The subscription was purchased through a different Apple ID — try signing in with the correct account. (3) The subscription is managed by a third party (like a cable provider or employer benefit) and must be canceled through them directly, not through Apple.
