Dropbox downgrade: prepare for the Basic storage limit

Staying above the Basic limit after a paid plan ends can restrict file operations and put files at risk over time.

Why this happens

Dropbox's individual-plan guidance describes a downgrade to Basic at the end of the billing period. The smaller allowance is not just a label: prolonged over-quota use can lead to restrictions and possible deletion of owned files. Do not assume that canceling guarantees unlimited free storage of everything already uploaded.

What to do

  1. Check your storage use and the allowance that will remain after the individual plan ends.
  2. Download and verify important files locally, then reduce cloud usage deliberately without deleting the only copy of anything needed.
  3. Finish cancellation and keep the effective downgrade date so the storage cleanup is completed before it takes effect.

Check the result

Confirm the renewal state and the storage state separately. A scheduled downgrade proves a billing change, not that every file is safely backed up or within the free allowance.
