How to Cancel Proton Mail Subscription
Cancel a paid Proton plan from subscription settings. Check shared bundle benefits and storage before moving to Free.

Before you cancel
Back up important mail and review Free-plan limits. If Mail storage is over its allowance after downgrade, sending and receiving new messages can stop.
Match the account email, plan and billing provider to your latest receipt. Choose the route below that matches that purchase.
How to cancel Proton Mail
Purchased directly from Proton Mail
- Sign in to account.proton.me and select a Proton service.
- Open Settings, All settings, then Subscription.
- Scroll to Cancel subscription, choose Continue, and confirm Cancel subscription again.
- Read and save the effective date shown for your account.
Make sure renewal has stopped
Return to billing after the last confirmation screen. Save the canceled status or scheduled end date, plus any confirmation email. A support request awaiting a reply is not the same as a completed cancellation.
If another charge appears, compare its payment date, account and plan with that record. Contact the billing provider with the relevant receipt and confirmation.
What happens after cancellation?
- Proton describes end-of-term cancellation to Free, while noting that this behavior is being rolled out; use your confirmation date.
- Changing to another paid plan can be immediate and converts unused time into account credit. Check every product included in your plan.
Cancellation and refunds
Stopping renewal does not automatically reverse an earlier charge. If you want a payment reviewed, contact the billing provider using the receipt and cancellation confirmation. Ask which refund terms apply to that purchase.
Common questions
Is an account credit a cash refund?
No. Proton describes prorated credit as a balance applied to future payments.
Can I change plans with an unpaid invoice?
The subscription guide says outstanding invoices must be paid before a plan switch.
